MARC Head start has identified goals for promoting the school readiness of young children. The goals are organized around five domains of early learning and development:

  • Physical Development and Health
  • Social and Emotional Development
  • Approaches to Learning
  • Language and Literacy
  • Cognition and General Knowledge

Research-based curriculum models, early childhood assessment systems, and measures of effective teacher-child interactions guide teaching and home visiting practices. Educators strive to provide learning experiences and interactions that accommodate individual children’s interest, rates of development, linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and learning styles. Experiences are interactive and play-based — providing children opportunities to investigate and make sense of the real world.

Children are observed as they engage in these every day experiences, and their progress toward school readiness goals is assessed. Child outcomes data is aggregated three times each year and analyzed by educators to inform continuous program improvement planning.
